10 Life Lessons from Ragnarok

If there’s an online game I would never get tired of playing, that would be Ragnarok Online. Maybe that explains why I failed Business Math in my college days and almost lost my job just last year. But guess what, I’m still playing the game. According to a Philippine Daily top-10 TV Show, Ragnarok is NOT the first online game in the country, but it is indeed the very first online game to be so popular, it got so many adaptations and keeps on coming back.

Yes, it keeps on coming back. Because on March 2015, the popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) Philippine Ragnarok Online was shut down completely and because not all of its best players can’t just simply move to the international server, they decided to make their own private servers with different rules and set ups for the patrons to keep the burning feeling of Ragnarok gaming alive.

The good news is; the Philippine Server is back again with its Closed Beta Test (CBT) on June 20 and is now fully operational to this date. So many excited players of all ages immediately registered and played that sometimes the server is having difficulties trying to handle all 20,000 players at the same time.

training entrance.jpg

Now what’s in this game that everyone wants to play so bad? Let me start by saying Ragnarok is a virtual simulation of living.

1. Ragnarok is an RPG(Role Playing Game), meaning it offers its players the freedom to choose what class or “Job” they want to be in the game, but in an outdoor adventure style. Unlike other role playing games, Ragnarok has a total of 8 first class jobs with specific roles to contribute in the game (Swordsman, Archer, Acolyte, Mage, Merchant, and Thief, Ninja, Soul Linker, and Gunslinger.) while basic stuff such as cooking and deliveries can be done as quests. Each character must go under training, pretty much like nursery or preparatory for children.

2. Ragnarok will teach you geography. Ragnarok is a world with cities resembling our real world’s countries that you can visit. These places are just perfect enough to make you feel you’re exploring places like Thailand, England, and Hawaii.

3. Ragnarok will teach you how to handle business. Given the fact that you act on behalf of your job is what makes the world of this game go round. But business is also a thing in this game. To earn more, some players makes business in game depending on their job. For example, if your job is the Merchant Class – Blacksmith, who are geniuses in crafting equipment, they can make weapons and sell them.

4. Ragnarok will teach you that every drop of currency(Zeny) is important. Monsters and quests have different levels and therefore, offers different amount of rewards and drops. These rewards and drops could either be useful or not for your specific job and can be sold to NPCs (Non-Player Characters) of the game for fair price. Basically, you earn depending on how you work hard. See those white bars on the photo? That’s all vendors selling something. And that’s just the tip of the ice berg. These vendors can occupy the half of the town if they all go sell something all at the same time.

5. Ragnarok will teach you that teamwork is the key. In the game, players can make a temporary group called “party” where players from different places in the country can play together as one team and each job has their own task. Pretty much the same in the real world where in some point of our lives, we were paired with someone we don’t fully know, and there are times that we get ourselves into a team. To achieve the common goal, we work hard together with these strangers and in the minute one of the members go idle (or in the gaming terms “away from keyboard or AFK”), the team will fail.

6. Ragnarok will teach you how to be a good leader. Being a good leader is no easy task even in the game. In the real world, too much tasks can give you stress. Imagine yourself thinking about the bills, then taking care of your kids, and thinking about your job, then thinking about problems, etc. It’ll make you crazy. But for some people, the more they handle stress of different problems, the more they get used to it. In the game, you invite members, you focus on your job in battle, and at the same time, also you try to manage members that don’t do their job. The more you expose yourself to these problems, the stronger you become in handling them. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

7. Ragnarok will teach you whenever there’s challenge, there’s conflict. It’s common in any way that two persons try to decide who’s the best is. The bigger version of it is war. In most games, Players-Vs-Player or PVP is a common way of proving your strength and skills to a fellow player. Ragnarok also has Guild Wars called War of Emperium. Emperium is a sort of golden crystal that controls an entire castle, which is also a symbol of power and whichever guild’s Emperium is holding the castle, is the best guild.

8. Ragnarok will remind you of your daily errands. Like how we are supposed to take a bath, brush our teeth, eat right, and do our homeworks, Ragnarok has also activities that are meant to be accomplished daily. Like how you earn the feeling of being refreshed when you take a bath daily, these quests will give you a not so rare but a daily necessity reward.

9. Ragnarok will show you the fun of growing up. In real life, some people find growing up as a frustration that if they can only skip it, they would. But growing up has a lot things to offer too like getting a better job, age-restriction passes, or getting married. You can also experience these happy things in the game. But like in real life, you have to work hard to achieve them. For example in the marriage, you have to buy the ring, get the wedding dress, experience the hardship of reaching the church wearing the dress, and pay for the wedding service. All of these will pay off when you and your spouse finally get a baby.

10. Ragnarok will teach you how economy affects everything. When there’s trade, there’s economy. And economy has its own dark days. It’s that time when the price is too low, it doesn’t match your effort of getting the item anymore. And there are also times when a group of players decide to take over an entire map so that they’re the only ones who can acquire the specific rare item and sell it with a really high price. So unfair.

In the end, Ragnarok Online is still just a game, created to escape from the real world for a while. It’s a good thing that the official server of Ragnarok is Pay-2-Play where you have to load (top-up) so you can play for hours but not the whole day.

Ragnarok, for me, is a representation of the real world in 2D where you go out every day in an unexpected adventure to work hard and live, have fun and socialize with others, and to value one’s self.

What Makes Wonder Woman Different from All Other DC Movies

Have you watched Wonder Woman? If you’re still thinking that Wonder Woman is just another sexy female super hero, then I’d say you haven’t. Like her Eye make-up that never seem to get wiped off, there are many other aspects that made the movie Wonder Woman different from other DC Movies.

Here’s what you can expect. Wonder Woman is still, and the most wondrous female crime-fighting hero in DC universe. Diana’s an amazon, born in an island of women. She’s trained to be genius in combat. Her golden whip can stretch and immobilize her enemies. And she fights alongside Batman and the others in Justice League.

And here’s you probably didn’t know. Watch out because these will spoil your excitement to watch the movie. She’s a demi-human, a child of god and a human which grants her the ability of inhuman speed,  jump on great heights, and super strength that is not alien in nature like Superman. In the movie, Diana is a princess loved by her mother so much that she’s not even allowed to wield a sword; On the contrary, she’s a living weapon destined to defeat Ares, god of war(or wisdom). Though a half-god, she can still be killed with a bullet which explains why she deflects it with her arm guards.

Starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince – Gal Gadot proved her worth as the story’s main star. Her face is just right, she’s gorgeous, innocent, fierce, and funny, perfect in every occasion. Even behind the scenes (which you could check on youtube), you can see how her game-face change instantly when needed. And check out her eye-liner throughout the movie, it’s a must buy.

The movie is humorous – Think about the other DC movies before Wonder Woman. It’s usually dark, dramatic, and full of suspense. But in Wonder Woman, the watchers are transported to a different world. The scenes and lines are witty and Diana’s ignorance to the real world made it even funnier. And top of that, she was partnered to a ‘Chris’

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor – Yup, we all know that there’s something about Chris(s) that makes all the girls watching superhero movies drool. Steve’s role is vital both in the story and to its viewers. It isn’t enough that only boys enjoys as Diana fights the Nazi army with her bare skin. The girls should see something pleasing too, perhaps a six pack of abs to balance it? If you will watch the movie, Chris Pine will be happy to show you more than that.

Women  can hide swords – Diana taught us under the sleeves are unthinkable tricks, and under the dress are unimaginable blades–swords in particular. Suddenly, women learned that swords go unconventionally perfect behind their backs and it goes smoothly even with a backless gown. Thank you Diana, girls can now attend the ball and slay their partners when caught red-handed dancing with another woman.

Super friends – Not really “super” though. Before Diana joined Justice League, she fought the war with just normal. Steve introduced Diana to his friends, an American native, an Irish Sniper, and an Arab conman. Together, they led the attack that forced the German army to retreat. Yes, she didn’t work alone. Finally,

No Cliff-hanger – Wonder Woman ended just right; giving its viewers the idea that there will be no sequel to the movie than Justice League. Unlike Superman Vs. Batman with a cliff-hanger scene of the dead Clark Kent leaving a clue that he’s going back to life. Will he be showing in Justice League? I don’t know, but he should be. We all know that DC has this thing of suddenly putting a character into the movie without telling the public like what Wonder Woman did.

The movie is so good that I can’t just give away any detailed spoiler. I suggest, you watch it on big screen so you would not miss any action Princess Diana prepared for you. And like how Wonder Woman ended without any cliff-hanger, I’ll stop right here.

5 Visual Arts that have been Replaced by Technology

Art has been a part of humanity since the early ages. We used art to express feelings, emotions, or even messages in a form of artistic visual form like sculptures and paintings. But as technology dominates everything, some of these arts and creative skills are slowly fading in our practices.

I remember how my classmates used to envy my hands for its artistic talents in school. How I normally write the lessons as if it was the Old Testament. How my teachers calls my name whenever they’re having trouble illustrating on the board. And how I vandalized the school wall and got praised by the Dean. It’s a skill that I learned from years of practice but after a decade, everyone can do it now with the help of technology. I don’t know if feeling bad about it is a bit childish, but the fact that arts are now being replaced by technology is just too much.

Here are 5 arts that are now being replaced by technology:

  1. PhotographyPhotography is the art or practice of taking pictures of places, people, events, or objects. The beauty of a particular photograph is defined by the photographers skill of capturing the particular shot. But ever since the people learned the capabilities of Photoshop and other photo editing applications, everyone is suddenly a skilled photographer. Editing various shots, changing scenery and colors, and even making your own photograph from your own imagination.
  2. Freehand SketchingOne of the most amazing hand skills is the ability to draw. Freehand Sketching is skill of which the artist uses tools like pencils or charcoal to create a visual masterpiece in a canvas. Freehand drawings are often the base for other arts such as architecture, visual novels, and even paintings. But like photography, Freehand sketching can now be done in devices like computers and even mobile phones. In this way, artists don’t have to buy every coloring tool and papers to make a good sketch and saves them to the trouble of uploading them online.
  3. AnimationWould you believe me if tell you that the animation before was done manually? Well the animation before isn’t easy. It is done by putting images or scenes in a running sequence to make a smooth animation like phenakistoscope, praxinoscope, and zoetrope. Each page is carefully drawn by hand with a slightly movement on the next page. Today, cartoons and animes are made easy by computers by their animators to the extent that they can even put 3-Dimensional movements and places to make the scene more realistic. I’m an anime fan myself so for me, this one is okay.

  4. CarvingCarving is another branch of art that uses tools to shape something from a material by scraping away portions of that material. People on the earliest days often uses wax, wood, and stones to make a sculpture. Today, with the modern technology, people can 3D print an object straight from their computers. The object is carefully drafted in 3D in the computer and the 3D printer machine will print it using materials like plastic.
  5. CalligraphyThe most recent type of art that has been replaced by technology, the Calligraphy is one of the most oldest types of art that most artists thought was irreplaceable with technology. Calligraphy is the art of hand writing of letters and lines with a broad tip instrument. A Penman is a master of handwriting using different kinds of pens and tip. Few months ago, people felt in-need of this rare art and started reviving it by making the Calligraphy machine that can hold a writing instrument with precision and copy signatures. Anyone may now do a hand-written work without using their hands.

And those are the 5 visual arts that have been defeated by technology. Do you think technology is taking it too far, or these type of arts should be preserved with practice? Did I missed other visual arts that are in the technology’s replacement list? Tell me in the comments below.

As a disciple of Art, I’m not in favor with replacing art with technology. If you’re with me, we can raise awareness by sharing this blog on our social media accounts. Thank you.

Know your Halloween

Imagine yourself suddenly chosen to name each Halloween costume that is inside the room to win a trip to your dream vacation. Can you name them all or is it bye-bye to your dream island get away?

Let me help you name and identify 20 of the most notorious Halloween character of all time:

  1. Bughuul – commonly known as “Boogeyman” has its most recent and frightening version thanks to the movie ‘Sinister’. You can tell he’s the Boogeyman by looking on his weir face. boogeyman.jpg
  2. Slenderman – is a super tall, super skinny, pale, bald, and faceless man in a suit with long arms. slenderman
  3. Davy Jones – is often mistaken as “the flying dutchman” because of the cartoon ‘Spongebob squarepants’. Note: Flying Dutchman is the cursed ghost ship. Davy Jones came from sailors’ idiom “Davy Jones’ Locker” – The depth of sea where dead sailor and shipwrecks go. If he doesn’t look like a captain, then probably he’s just another pirate.davy jones.jpg
  4. Banshee – or the wailing woman can’t be identified by the looks. A ghost lady is just another ghost until she constantly screams while crying. Then you got yourself a Banshee. banshee.jpg
  5. Wendigo – If today’s Christmas and you saw a costume of a standing deer in Christmas robe, then that’s a Krampus. but since it’s Halloween, that person on reindeer horns is a Wendigo – a Canadian folklore. wendigo.jpg
  6. Yuki-Onna – When you find a lovely lady wearing white kimono in the middle of snowy blizzard, that’s gotta be a ghost. The difference of Yuki Onna from a random Geisha is it’s plain white kimono outfit with extremely white skin and long hair. yukionna.jpg
  7. Stingy Jack – You probably know him as the “pumpkin king” or “Jack of the Lantern”. Stingy Jack is the very reason why people lit carved pumpkin lanterns on Halloween. Stingy Jack based on folklore, tricked the devil twice and forever searching for home as a lost spirit. Trivia: Stingy Jack lit a Turnip, not a pumpkin. stingy jack.jpg
  8.  Dullahan – The headless rider of the movie ‘Sleepy Hollow’. Dullahan appears to be a headless rider who beheads people in European folklore. dullahan.jpg
  9. Baba Yaga – is distinguishable than a normal witch. Baba Yaga came from Slavic folklore. An old lady that flies in a mortar and wields a pestle. baba-yaga
  10. Mary Tudor – is the real name of Bloody Mary, the ghost you call in the mirror. There’s a more challenging version where you taunt Mary by saying “I stole your baby, Bloody Mary”. Bloody Mary is more…well…bloody than a normal ghost white lady. bloody mary.jpg
  11. Sadako – is also distinctly different from a normal white lady ghost. She’s the japanese ghost who leaps from a well, comes out of your TV, and kill you in a horrible way after watching her cursed video giving you 7 days to solve it. She has that long black messy hair and stunning (literally) killer eyes. sadako.jpg
  12. Kharon – is different from Grim Ripper/Death. Kharon is the boatman in the river Styx who agrees to be your ride in exchange of gold coins. charon
  13. Kuchisake Onna – is more scary than her seasonal cousin Yuki Onna and porbably The Joker’s other wife. Kuchisake Onna which means Slit Mouthed Woman wears a decent outfit and flu mask which hides her slit mouth. She offers a chart of question and answer whether you die or live slit-mouthed. kuchisake onna.jpg

‘Your Name’ : The twist and turns

Warning: Spoiler Alert

After ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’made us cry and unconventionally hate trains, the writer Makoto Shinkai, did it again with his new Anime movie: ‘Kimi no Na Wa’ or ‘Your Name’ with the animation of CoMix Wave Films and distributed in by Toho. Was premiered at the Anime Expo 2016 convention in Los Angeles, California on July 3, 2016, and later premiered in Japan on August 26, 2016.

I just can’t move-on of how ‘Kimi no Na Ka’ adds a whole new color on the commonly switching-souls story. The twist is so comprehensive that most viewers didn’t even notice what’s been layed by the writer even from the very beginning of the movie. Putting theme songs as to-make-the-story-short is also a new flavor.

It has full of twists and turns that will make you finish the movie but still asking how it happened. To help you, here are some hints that will summarize the whole story even if you don’t finish it.

Un-surprised grandmother
Ever wonder why the grand mother is not so surprised when her granddaughter Mitsuha acts differently every other day? It all goes way back from her ancestors. Mitsuha’s ability of switching soul with another person is a normal phenomenon on her family.

Taki on rooftop
Ever noticed why there’s a scene on the start where Taki’s outside watching the comet Tiamat as it splits, but the place seem different when he tried to call on Mitsuha on the night that the comet will suppose to pass the earth? He’s on top of a footbridge or some sort. Why? That’s because the scene where Taki is standing on a rooftop is three years ago. Their timeline is not same. That answers the question why didn’t they just exchange numbers so they call on each other every day.

Photos on the wall
Taki noticed a photo of Mitsuha’s town ___ on wall of memorabilia in the middle of his date with ___ at Photo Exhibition Nostalgia. Well yes, the photos hanging on the wall are the photos of Mitsuha’s town before it was completely devastated by a natural disaster.

The string on Taki’s wrist
The mysterious red string on Taki’s wrist that he’s wearing every morning is actually the ribbon on Mitsuha’s hair. How did it happen? Coz it’s not Taki wasn’t the first one to think that he should meet Mitsuha on her place. Mitsuha, 3 years ago, tried to find Taki. And guess what, she found him inside a train. She even tried talking to him but Taki doesn’t remember her. Why? Coz Taki’s suppose to experience the switching three years after.

The News
The news of the incoming comet Tiamat is only shown on Mitsuha’s time, indicating that the phenomenon only happened three years ago.

2 comet craters
The 2 biggest hints I saw in this movie are these two giant craters. The lake is almost perfect circle, and just few kilometer hikes from this town is another crater. That means this area is actually a drop zone of meteorites ever since. It came to me when I saw the second whole they called the body of Miyamizu Shrine’s god. And this actually scared me because from that moment I knew there will be a third meteor strike like it always do every 1200 years.

And boy! I was right. As Taki discovered what really happened, he suddenly realized that Mitsuha is in the undamaged shrine crater near town. He decided to drink Mitsuha’s sake and was given a chance to rewrite the future but will forget everything slowly and that’s how he turned the whole tragic story into a new chapter.

The feeling you know the person but you can’t remember the name, a story we all can relate with.

15 Best post-apocalyptic fiction movies of all time

It was prophesied and proven wrong for so many times. It was called many names in all religions and sects. Some say it has already begun in many forms and many ways while others don’t believe at all. Most people are both fascinated and at the same time, afraid that day might come yet we exercise our expectations by making stories and films.

Some of us love to watch these kinds of films to give us a quick head start of what Apocalypse would really look like and what can we do to survive it. We imagine ourselves in the shoes of the main character answer the question “If I’m in his/her situation, what would I do?” And these movie leading characters answers the question for you as the film goes.

Before we go down to the list, let me explain the relationship between Disaster films to post-apocalyptic fictions. Disaster films are a film genre that has an ongoing disaster as its subject and primary plot device. Most of these movies don’t get a sequel since the ending could either only “the end of everything” or “new beginning”. The 2012 disaster film titled ‘2012’, for example, didn’t get a sequel. Who would’ve wanted a 2nd end of the world anyway? Unless it ends with a cliff-hanger. Post-apocalyptic fiction is a genre which involves global catastrophic risk that could be natural, man-made, medical, or imaginative.

There are lots of disasters to post-apocalyptic films created in the history of Hollywood but I selected the most watched and famous films that became once a blockbuster. Remember, these films are depicted on post-apocalyptic setting or what we call “the aftermath.” Some of these movies have a glimpse of the past right before the apocalypse started.

  • Zombieland

Nope. Zombieland is not some sort of wonderful theme park dedicated to the undead with people wearing zombie costumes. No. Zombieland is more frank than that. After a virus turns most people into zombies, the world’s surviving humans remain locked in an ongoing battle against the hungry undead. Now for the 4 survivors Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock, the world has still little fun to offer by enjoying the little things as they try to survive.

  • Shaun of the Dead

Yes, the funny way to survive. Once again, Simon Pegg proved his brilliance in making a masterpiece out of a movie. Shaun of Dead could be the funniest post-apocalyptic zombie fiction film. It is about survival, alright. But Shaun and his friends combined with lively (mostly from the band Queen’s) music makes this film a less-serious and hilarious way of surviving a zombie apocalypse.

  • World War Z

The only movie where you see zombies making pyramids to get over a wall or reaching a flying helicopter. If ever a zombie apocalypse happens, I would pray it won’t be the same as in World War Z. Zombies there are so extremely fast. They can run fast, jump high, and form a Zombie tsunami. You would never guess how the U.N. Investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) solved this global catastrophe.

  • Resident Evil Movies

This could be the most popular zombie apocalypse movie ever created. Although the first movie of Resident Evil is a story right before the virus hit the cities which is not post-apocalyptic, watching the film gives you the idea what the main character, Alice (Mila Jovovich) is facing on the next sequels. Resident Evil films will give you a thorough idea of what “extinction” is about.

  • 28 Days/Weeks Later

28 Days/Weeks Later is a zombie apocalypse movie that features its characters 28 days and weeks after the viral outbreak in Great Britain. Here’s to keep you on track. 15 days later, Mainland Britain is quarantined. 28 Days later, the first movie, British mainland has been destroyed by the rage virus that can infect a living host in seconds. 5 weeks later, infected people died of starvation. 11 weeks later, American stepped into London to give aid. 18 weeks later, the British mainland is declared free of infection. 24 weeks later, reconstruction begins. And the sequel movie started 28 weeks later.

  • Mad Max

There are 4 basic needs of man: air, food, shelter, and water. But after humanity embraced greed with oil for economic gain and power, other natural resources rapidly depleted and turned the whole world thirsty for water. In this post-apocalyptic film, water is gone. It’s unclear how it happened so fast but one thing is certain, people started killing each other for water.

  • Waterworld

In the other hand, if Mad Max is about a world of endless sand dunes, Waterworld is a world full of…well…water. In this film, nature once again, retakes every land and drowned it with salt water. Maybe the sun gets finally tired of trolling people with extreme heat so it just decided to melt the glaciers in the north and south to end it with a global endless swim. Score to Darwin Award-winning humanity, some people finally adapted and evolved in his drowning environment. The main character that’s only known as “the mariner”, developed feet webs and gills making him able to breathe underwater. He will then meet a child with a map on her back and help the search for the legendary “dryland”.

  • Maze Runner Trilogy

Finally, humanity successfully destroyed the ozone layer making the ultraviolet rays scorched earth for eternity. But you will only learn the truth on the trilogy’s first film ending scene. After escaping the deadly shifting halls of the maze, the protagonists will find themselves in a world devastated by heat.

  • Divergent Chronicles

It is clear that in this movie, humans are the ones who destroyed themselves. A world-war broke, nuke missiles fly, most of the population and major cities wiped, and then there’s peace. To ensure the prevention of another conflict, humanity is divided accordingly. The problem is whenever a system is introduced, there’s always somebody who could either be against it or too great for it.

  • I Am Legend

A genetically re-engineered measles virus that’s supposed to be curing cancer turned into a lethal strain that killed 90% of those it infects, mutates the 9% into predatory, with the only remaining 1% immune. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is one of those immune.

  • 5th wave

If neither we humans nor nature will bring us to heavens, aliens would probably be the ones to send us there. . 1st Wave – The aliens hit humanity with an electromagnetic pulse that killed all the power on the planet; 2nd Wave – Earthquakes that resulted to giant tidal waves; 3rd Wave – Weaponized Bird flu or a form of Ebola virus outbreak; 4th Wave – are the “Silencers” or Aliens that looks like humans; The 5th Wave is bombing every city via mother ship.

  • Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow is a looping post-apocalyptic story of Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) who lives right after dying, finding himself stuck on time, fighting invincible aliens, but giving him the chance to reshape his future.

  • Wall-E

A cute anime movie from Pixar. Human waste cannot be controlled and the only way for humanity to survive is to leave the earth and find a new planet, leaving the garbage AI robot Wall-E in charge of cleaning the garbage left by humans. In time, Wall-E will meet an advance rover named Eve and eventually fell in-love with her. Wall-E’s adventure begins when he found the last plant and puts it in a shoe.

  • Terminator Chronicles

Terminator story is much like the Matrix but with different ending. Man created machines, and then machines turned against their creators. Man fights back and wins the war. But humanity’s fate is certain, “man will win against machines” and the stories of each film is to ensure the future will happen.

  • Matrix Trilogy

“And man said, ‘let there be light’ and he was blessed by light, heat, magnetism, gravity, and all the energies of the universe.”

If the beginning of the end really exists, the Matrix’s story is what I believed in to be closest to reality.

“Then the man made the machine in his own likeness.”

The Matrix world is so complex that it will take me another article to explain. We are now in Post-modern Information Age of our time-line; we have created machines to satisfy our wants and even made machines with Artificial Intelligence that can decide. We are not far from creating a machine that looks, think, and moves like us humans. In the Matrix, machines learned to disobey orders and retaliate against their masters. Thus Humans vs. Machines began, explained in The Matrix’s side story ‘The 2nd Renaissance’ of the ‘Animatrix’ film.

The 5th Wave: My Kind of Story of Survival

9ab4dd8c1349505084b80dd9cc10224dI’ve had enough of movies about an inexperienced main character, starting from knowing totally nothing and therefore making stupid decisions that leads to other characters’ misfortune right on the first parts of the movie.

Before I start a particular movie, I watch out for three things: How the movie caught my attention, how I liked the movie, and how the movie will affect me. And I could say this movie passed all the 3 criteria in winning my heart. But before I tell my personal opinion, let me enlighten you first.

The 5th Wave is about the story of a teenager Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz) under Alien invasion. They call these Aliens “the others”. ‘The others’ had systematic phases in attacking earth. It’s like the 12 days of Christmas but shorter and terrifying. 1st Wave – “Lights Out” The aliens hit humanity with an electromagnetic pulse that killed all the power on the planet; 2nd Wave – “Surf’s up” Earthquakes that resulted to giant tidal waves; 3rd Wave – “Pestilence” Weaponized Bird flu or a form of Ebola virus outbreak; 4th Wave – are the “Silencers” or Aliens that looks like humans; The 5th Wave is bombing every city via mother ship. Lost her mom and dad, Cassie’s desperate, with the help of her Alien boyfriend Evan to rescue her little brother Sam/Nugget (Zackary Arthur) who’s under Ben’s team in the Other Base Camp.

Here’s how this movie caught my attention:

I love action. Chloe Grace Moretz is one of my favorite Hollywood actresses because she’s young, gorgeous, and good on her roles. I first saw Chloe on her role as Hit-Girl in the movie Kick-Ass and I already became a fan of her. Imagine a young girl with guns!? Beat that, Lara Croft! After her Kick-Ass movie, I already expected she would get another same role. And boy, she got it.

The story like what I’ve said earlier is a post-apocalyptic, extra-terrestrial, tragedy drama action war film and is brought to us by one of the best leading sci-fi gaming computer-graphic companies in the world -SONY. No wonder where those special effects came from.

Now here’s how the movie suits my taste:
In the first 10 minutes, you know exactly what’s happening -That’s because Cassie  is narrating everything at the back of the scene. That’s the good thing about movies with narration, the feeling of confusion and misleading isn’t there because the movie is guiding you. It’s also on the first minutes where you will never going to ask “how come that it happened there and didn’t happen here?” question which often happens on films about worldwide devastation, The 5th Wave movie also has a short clip of what is happening in the other face of the earth when the catastrophe hits the leading character’s place. All of these breath-taking moments happened only on the early minutes, I could say the movie is already as stunner and you’ll be left out if you didn’t focus your attention (after all of these eye-catching scenes).856ddef4b7d910f7ab6ed33860367a8d.jpg

The main casts understand that their world is not like a walk in a park anymore. They (particularly Zombie’s squad 52) accepted it and embraced the fact that whether they like it or not, they have to fight. Let’s take the very first scene for example (sorry for the spoiler), you will see Cassie running through the woods and end up in an abandoned gas station. There, she stopped for a moment to get some necessities: water, toothbrush, feminine pad, canned-food, and all the basic survival needs she could find…And also had killed an innocent wounded civilian. And after all that happened to her, she still managed to be focused, stay brave, and alert. She’s your ideal companion in the end-of-the-world.

the-5th-wave-image02.jpgI’m also staring on how Cassie holds her looted Assault Rifle. She holds the gun almost professionally for an American high-school student and a girl. The Rifle she’s holding is a well-known M16 rifle used by the U.S. government for decades. Since M16 has many variants but based on its shortened barrel length, I’m guessing she looted a M4 Carbine. The assault rifle is mounted with Holographic Diffraction sight, telescoping butt-stock, and a NATO STANAG 30-round magazine. With all those specifications, I could say she picked the right tool for the job.komedi_1467281308298_162.gif

Her friends are well-trained…or in their case, extra-terrestrial trained, and one of the best selected wolf-packs in the Alien Forward Operating Base. Honestly, if I’m going to fight for my survival, I would choose a group that can fight rather than a group that can pray. Zombie/Ben (Nick Robinson)’s team is one of the best teams that the Alien training ground dispatched to clear an area of survivors that later on turned against their alien superiors. They are also well-equipped when they left the camp.

komedi_1467284081983_91.gifWhat makes the story interesting for me is that Cassie has an alien boyfriend with super strength, super speed, and hawk-eye accuracy in sniping. And if you’re a fitness teacher, you might give him an A+ for having that body muscles. Cassie really felt the heat as she peeked on Evan (Alex Roe) taking a bath on the river.

The leading team casts are only my age and younger. Seeing young people fighting the real war is somewhat inspiring. And here I am thinking what clothes to wear, what food to eat, and what gadget to buy. It hits me right into my ego.

Lastly, here’s how the movie affected me:

The movie reminds me the survival lessons I learned in my elementary scout days. I’m pretty sure they’re not preparing us for a future galactic invasion but being prepared is always the key to survival.

I am now hoping for a sequel and Wikipedia said Sony might consider another film franchise.

For me, The 5th Wave is an over-all great post-apocalyptic movie I watched. Don’t argue with me, I know Hunger Games, Divergent, and Maze Runner are far better, but these movies didn’t suit my taste. Matrix Trilogy is still the best but if Sony and its producers make the 5th Wave a trilogy, this could be my new favorite.

If the movie 5th Wave gets a sequel, wouldn’t it be titled The 6th Wave? *BA DUM TSS!*
